A 1970’s Time Capsule

POP CULTURE

C

Imagine that on December 31, 1979, a group of historians decide to bury a time capsule filled with news events and pop culture phenomena that were symbols of the 1970’s. What would be in this decades old time capsule? Get ready for a far out and groovy trip around the 1970’s?

Be sure to visit my News and Noteworthy post today as well.

The A to Z Challenge has dueling decades going on.  Check out the 1980s theme from a fellow blogger HERE

CHER

Photographs say it all.  One of the most iconic personalities of the 1970’s.  C is definitely for Cher. Cher has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, a special CFDA Fashion Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Cannes Film Festival Award, among several other honors. Throughout her career, she has sold 200 million records worldwide. She is the only artist to date to have a number-one single on a Billboard chart in each decade from the 1960s to the 2010s.

A to Z on the Music Charts

Crocodile Rock by Elton John reached number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 on February 3, 1973 and stayed number 1 for three weeks.

A to Z At the Movies

Close Encounters of the Third Kind was not the top grossing film of 1977.  If you look at the list of top films of the 1970s, 1977 was one hell of a year at the box office.  Close Encounters is number 13 of the top grossing films of the decade.  One of the many Steven Spielberg movies that you’ll see in my A to Z.

Cher is so beautiful. I have never seen these pictures of Cher before. I should have googled. Cher had posted a picture with her 90 year old mother recently and the old lady is more beautiful.

Your pictures are great. I saw Sonny and Cher back in the early 70’s at the old Elmwood Casino in Windsor, Canada. Your post brings back lots of memories.

  3. I only came across Cher in the 80s – but then that’s when I started to listen to music that wasn’t my parent’s record collection. I always liked Turn Back Time :). Close Encounters – I remember being a bit bemused with it when I first saw it. I was watching a re-run of The Two Ronnies yesterday where they did a take off of Crocodile Rock 🙂

  4. My husband can’t stand Cher, so we never watch her movies–not even the good ones. *pout* What can you do? Life is about appeasing those we love and keeping it good, eh?

    • I can see that. Cher was always over the top so most loved or hated her. I loved variety shows so Sonny and Cher was popular in our house but I can’t say I followed her into the movie theater.

  7. Cher is an excellent choice for “C”. I have always thought she is an underrated actress, in spite of her Oscar. I like your theme, it’s fun. I will be back! (I am also doing the A-Z thing, at Reelfan.com.)

I was too young to be aware of Cher in the 70s but appreciated her acting in the 80s. And then she released some albums in the 90s and it was like “oh yeah, she can sing too!”

I enjoyed Sonny and Cher from their first debut. Their TV show was among my favorites–they had some great guest artists that were outside the realm of what I’d normally see on other shows.

Cher has had quite an amazing career and to my ears she has remained consistently a fine artist.

I love Cher! She is so amazing: her showmanship is unmatched, in my opinion. She is so photogenic. And her personality is so sarcastically funny. She definitely is iconic, that’s for sure. Great pics of her.
Elton John is another one. I’ve only seen him twice in concert but each time was an incredible experience. The audience was just in awe of him.
I have several CDs of both Cher and Elton. Great music there!
