“Ladies and gentlemen if you look to your left, you will see the last bookstore in the world. As you know, back in 2015, the United Nations banned the printing of books of any kind to save the depleted forests. Citizens around the world were forced to go digital.”

“This is it Marge. Another item on your bucket list,” said Henry as he kissed his wife on the cheek.

“If you’re leaving my tour at this fabulous site, I wish you continued excitement for the rest of your stay. I’m Jose, your tour guide and thank you for sharing your time today.”

“It says here in my digital guide that one hundred years ago due to the ban, collectors around the world grabbed up all the printed books. Hooked on Books held firm and now the government supports them as a museum,” said Marge.

Henry and Marge joined the queue to enter the museum. Suddenly a man in a dark trench coat tapped Henry on shoulder and leaned in close.

“How’d you like to buy the little woman a dream gift?” said the man.

“What!”

The man opened his trench coat to reveal it was lined with books of all types.

Oh oh…I don’t think I would buy from that guy. Your story makes one think. I love books but hate deforestation. I just think that people will always have room for the classic book

Nice twist to the story. I much prefer to read digital, but books look nice on the shelf! 😀

  3. I think a world where books were black market objects would turn a lot of people into criminals. I’d pick up a few paperbacks on the sly. Wouldn’t you?

I like this, but am sad at how book stores are fading! Have you ever seen the movie The Book Thief? It is really good!

A very likely scenario in near future. I do hope it does not happen during my life time.

Fun romp! – a bookstore as a tour stop in the future~
I’ve converted to digital out of convenience but still love the feel of paper pages at my fingertips.

    Good story!

I’d be all for the shift to digital books! But contemporaries in poor countries who happen to be on the wrong side of the digital divide would be further impoverished.

Loved your take on the prompt. Good, but scary, story.

  10. Perhaps men, in their resourcefulness, will come up with a plant that can be used to produce enough paper so trees won’t have to be used for that purpose. Good story, but I hope it never comes to that. Well done, Maryann. 🙂 — Suzanne
