Submitted for Mondays Finish the Story
This is a brand new flash fiction weekly challenge that I decided to join. Welcome to Mondays Finish the Story! This site was inspired by two flash fiction challenges: Alastair Forbes’ Sunday Photo Fiction and Rochelle Wisoff-Fields Friday Fictioneers. There is a bit of a difference though on this blog! Mondays Finish the Story will provide a photo and the opening line of a story. The challenge is for you to finish the story in 100-150 words! If you also want to give it a try, you can read all about the challenge at the link at the top.
For those of you that have read my flash fiction before, you know that I like stories that continue for a few weeks. For the inaugural run of this weekly event, I will rise to the challenge with a new serial. Please enjoy The Colony
The team headed toward the island not sure what they would find when they arrived. The cryptic messages received had been strange. At first, Doctor Powers reported that his group was settling in fine then within days he spoke of unexpected visitors to the colony. Finally yesterday, Doctor Powers spoke like he was under duress and our recorders picked up background speech that didn’t sound like any known dialect. Captain West has a well-trained team; however this situation is new territory. Experience told him that the unknown often meant extreme danger. Who are these unexpected visitors? How did they infiltrate the colony? It is hard to believe that Doctor Powers allowed access without force and what about the strange speech? As the team approached the rocky shore, Captain West signaled radio silence. With packs on their backs and weapons ready, the team set out in search of the colonists.
Come back for next week’s Mondays Finish the Story to see how the story continues.
