Sunday Photo Fiction Challenge – The Unleashing of Three Dragons

The Assignment: The idea of Photo Fiction is write a story of around 100-200 words (which is also called Flash Fiction) based on a photo as a prompt. In this particular photo fiction, the story must be based on the photo below.  To read stories written by others, click on the links tool below.

On the September 14, 2014 Sunday Photo Fiction I wrote a trilogy.  I decided that I would try expanding those stories for a few weeks.  The titles will not be Train Track Trilogy each week but will have three or a version of three in the title but be a continuation.  To read the first part which is the introduction to the three stories, please enjoy Train Track Trilogy.  Last week, the stories continued in Three Tales in a Bubble.  This week, please enjoy The Unleashing of Three Dragons.

The Unleashing of Three Dragons

When the doorbell rang, Kim looked through the peephole and stepped back in fear. Outside stood Ian, a friend of her brothers and the root of her addiction. Ian introduced her to drugs and was still a dealer and user.

“Open up. I’ve been watching and I know you’re home,” said Ian.

In a panic, Kim paced her living room. She knew she didn’t have the strength to resist and her dragon would be unleashed. Kim picked up the telephone and pressed 9-1-1.

Dara put the kettle on for tea then joined her parents at the table. After a moment, she began to speak.

“Mom, Dad. I’m going to have a baby.”

After many moments of silence, Mrs. Morgan finally spoke.

“You’re sure? Have you been to a doctor?

“No doctor yet but I used a home pregnancy test.”

“What about the father?” asked her father.

“He doesn’t know. He isn’t free and the University would fire him.”

At this piece of information, the dragon was unleashed in the form of her father’s temper, a monster she knew all too well.

Krista started the coffee.

“Go easy on the coffee. With the rations, I don’t know how long it will last,” said Mildred.

Sighing, she wanted to tell her mother it was 2014, not 1945. Krista took a deep breath and counted to ten. She had a meeting that afternoon so research into her father’s disappearance is how she planned to get answers. There was no point in unleashing a dragon with her mother’s mental state until she had information.
