Karla and George took turns reading throughout the night.

July 1, 1940
I received a letter today from Samuel. He is back and wants to see me. I am not sure I should. What did I see in London? I will ask him.

July 6, 1940
I met Samuel today. He held my hand and we took a stroll. I was happy even though I knew that I would soon spoil it by confronting him. Near the old bell tower, we sat on a bench and Samuel kissed me. It was nice but I was determined. I said that I had been in London recently and I had seen him. He looked surprised. He then started telling me that he was bound by the Official Secrets Act of 1939 but if I wanted to work with him he could bring me into the fold. I was relieved but I wanted to know what I would be doing. He couldn’t tell me specifically but asked about my typing skills. I am to travel by train next week to a place called The Mansion, Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. I can only tell my family that it is secretarial work for the war department.
