Witness to the Century

More than one hundred years ago a witch cast a spell and made me part of this building’s facade.   From my location, I’ve been a witness to the century.

Early on people would pass in horse drawn carriages and that gave way to horseless contraptions that moved fast along the cobblestones.

Eighty-four years ago I saw a crowd running towards that bank and then a few days later men were jumping out of windows.

During the war, young men in uniform would pass by and often they would be holding tight to their crying sweethearts.

Vietnam War 07a

I remember other wars too and all the protests.  I suppose there is still more change to come.

    Dear Mary Ann,

The river keeps on rollin’. Great evocation of times passage and our place in the flow.

    Aloha,

  5. Dear Maryann,

The way you incorporated the photos is very nice. I liked the move through the centuries. I think you mean eighty-four…you need a y. 😉

A very enjoyable piece, Maryann. I often think of the things my father saw in life between 1909 and 2004. A lot happens in 100 years, especially with the rate at which technology doubles today.

So much change to contemplate. I’d like to think our brains are evolving…but fear our mental prowess and technology have evolved just enough to cause the planet’s demise.

Lovely observations throughout, but I’m struck by: “During the war, young men in uniform would pass by and often they would be holding tight to their crying sweethearts.” The image is haunting, as are the words.

  15. Really fun post and use of the prompt. It’s so true… if buildings and edifices could talk! I love the use of the other photos to carry us along. I so enjoy participating in this each week… so fun to write, and then read all the great stories! Nice work!
