Submitted for Daily Prompt: Bookworms
Assignment: Grab the nearest book. Open it and go to the tenth word. Do a Google Image Search of the word. Write about what the image brings to mind.
I grabbed Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and the tenth word was “Out”.
I have to admit that I cheated a little. Where Google Images did show baseball scenes when I typed the word “Out”, I did want to find an image from a specific team and I searched a little.
The word “out” can certainly bring on a different feeling to a baseball fan depending on which team you are routing for. Is “Out” a time for celebration or for the agony of defeat. In 2008, the image for the fans of the Philadelphia Phillies brought on a feeling euphoria.
In 2007, the Phillies won the first of five consecutive National League East Champion but failed to win the National League Pennant and go to the World Series. Even with the loss, Phillies shortstop, Jimmy Rollins was named the National League’s MVP. This was the second consecutive year the team had this honor (Ryan Howard 2006).
In 2008, the Phillies clinched the National League East for the second year in a row and then redeemed their previous year’s playoff performance by winning the NLDS three games to one against the Brewers, and they defeated the Dodgers in Los Angeles as well, 4–1. As the National League champions, the Phillies advanced to the 2008 World Series to play the Tampa Bay Rays. After the first-ever suspended postseason game in World Series history in game five (severe storm), the Phillies rode their pitching rotation to a 4–1 victory in the Fall Classic; Hamels was named the series MVP for both the NLCS and the World Series. In 2009, the Phillies returned to World Series but lost against the NY Yankees and in 2010 and 2011 had their fourth and fifth consecutive season as National League East Champions. The 2012 and 2013 seasons have been disappointing to Phillies fans so for now I like to remember 2008. I think the picture above and the following from youtube says it all.
