Submitted for Daily Prompt: Imagine
Assignment: The next time you’re in a public place — a coffeehouse, a park, a store — observe the people around you. Pick a person, a couple, or a group, and imagine what their lives might be like. Photographers, artists, poets: show us IMAGINE.
Well I didn’t go anywhere this morning but straight to work, so I will make the entire thing up if that is OK. 🙂
Today when I drove onto the highway, I was concentrating on getting to work. Traffic was light, so I was able to look around a little while still keeping my eyes on the road. After a few miles, a bright orange Volkswagen Beetle came up beside me in the right lane and I looked over at the driver. The driver of this brightly colored vehicle was a clown. He had on a black bowler hat, a red rubber nose, orange wig and full facial makeup. I could not see what he was wearing and I had to turn my attention back to the road because the site of a clown at 8:00 am made me laugh very hard it could have been a road hazard.
I wonder where this clown was going at 8:00 am. I’ve seen clowns at the circus and at kids birthday parties and of course on television, but during the week I wasn’t sure what kind of events he might have. I started to imagine and it brought a smile to my face. This clown had a job to do and it was to help ease the difficult life of children in the hospital.
In my imagination, the clown left the highway and drove to the hospital. When he arrived, he opened his trunk and grabbed his wheeled bag of gadgets and doohickeys and entered the hospital. Inside, the personnel gave him a warm welcome because they knew him and understood the importance of his job. He grabbed a cub of coffee in the employees lounge and began preparing for his very important task. The head nurse from the children’s ward came in to brief him on any changes in patients since last Thursday so that he would give special attention to new patients or children especially in need of laughter. When he was ready, he pick up his squeaky horn and wheeled his bag into the ward. With a big smile on his clown face he began bringing joy to the children. Outside the room, the nurses and doctors had tears in their eyes.
By the way, it is difficult to find an image of a clown that isn’t scary.
