In the play area just outside the back door of Fun Kids Daycare Center, Christina Jones sat by herself on the floor of the merry-go-round. Her teacher, Mrs. Matthews was standing inside the classroom looking out at the small child. Christina couldn’t play on the merry-go-round because there were no more children left at the center to play with today. It was late on Monday and her mom had not come to pick her up yet. Although this was not the first time the child’s mom was late, Mrs. Matthews was concerned because on the previous occasions, Mrs. Jones called explaining and eventually arrived only thirty minutes after the deadline. Today she had not called and now it was nearly 7:00 pm. At 7:00 pm, the centers policy would have to be enacted and the police and social services telephoned. Mrs. Matthews had already attempted to contact Mrs. Jones and the names in the emergency contact list. The calls to Christina’s mother went straight to voicemail and the other telephone numbers turned out to be disconnected.
Mrs. Matthews picked up the receiver of the telephone and press 9-1-1. After a few rings, the voice of the dispatcher said “9-1-1 operator, what is your emergency?” Mrs. Matthews stated her name, her location and explained the situation. She hated to make this call; however it was necessary for the safety of the child and required by the center’s policy. The dispatcher said that she would contact social services and send a police officer to the daycare center. After twenty minutes, Officer James Rochelle arrived and the social worker, Mrs. Sherry Williams shortly afterwards. The social worker made additional attempts to contact Christina’s mother and the police officer called area hospitals. When he finished the call with General Hospital, Mrs. Matthews knew by his face that there was news. There had been an accident on the turnpike and a women had been brought in unconscious but is now in emergency surgery. They had made several attempts to locate relatives but had no success. Her name is Crystal M. Jones.
